How to Expand PvP… Conclusion

Today I just wanted to wrap up my thoughts and throw in some information I didn’t include in my posts, or perhaps clarify completely.

To backtrack and clarify – my system would expand the BO count to 12 BOs (4 existing, 4 new ones from the Order PvE lake, and 4 new ones from the Destro PvE lake). While I am not dead set on having 12 BOs – I do think expanding the battle outwards into the PvE lakes is an easy solution to improving increasing the RvR experience. My goal was to turn existing major landmarks or PQs with somewhat interesting storylines and locations into BOs – sometimes maps lacked locations that fit the profile within the boundaries I allowed myself. In an ideal world perhaps one day the RvR limits would be pushed to the entire map, but I think it should be a gradual expansion. As another clarification – the PQs would still operate as PQs (minus the first stage which is always grinding ‘x’ mobs) and instead of a bulk amount of resources, it would offer resources split over a amount of bags; this way the PQs would encourage multiple players to be present as one player solo-ing a PQ would only get one bag with minimal results.

One thing I did want to add that I didn’t mention in my posts was that I think it would be neat if each BO had a specific function in regards to keep takes. The function would be best served if it was only achieved at the BO in the other realms former PvE lake. The types of bonuses I’m talking about are: extra siege weapons, extra flying mounts, a wave of assailants (ranged dps 40 heroes), a suicide black powder keg for the door, or perhaps a long range mortar –¬† naturally everything on a reasonable timer. Give the BOs a role in keep takes/defenses, don’t just require them to level up a keep. I think there is much room to genuinely expand RvR into the PvE lake AND by giving BOs specific functions – not functions that are required to win, but functions that give a bump to the battle. I touched on these functions a little in some of the Black Crag BOs I added which had Wyvern nests or Gryrocpoter pads. I know it was a pretty weird function, but I always thought something could be made of the ability in Thunder Valley to send out bombers, why can’t this be extended to RvR at BOs?

How to Expand PvP… Elf – Eataine

The last zone of my little project, and perhaps one of the strangest zones. Why strange you ask? Well because while every single other map in Warhammer Online is riddled with elevation obstacles to break up the storyline and divide the realms, Eataine is one huge flat zone (by flat I mean you can go everywhere, yes there are rolling hills). Also being that it has no obstacles the zone seems much much larger. Lets see if we can turn the tiny RvR lake into something more substantial. Read more…

How to Expand PvP… Elf – Dragonwake

Of all the zones in Warhammer, Dragonwake always struck me as the most appropriate. While other zones represent what are provinces/kingdoms in the world of Warhammer (which by the way is suppose to be bigger than Earth), Dragonwake is in fact a small passage between Eataine and Caledor. Anyway that aside, today I explore not only Dragonwake, but the left out Isle of the Dead – a grim place that clearly needs more dead bodies. Read more…

How to Expand PvP… Elf – Caledor

Today I venture to the last pairing on my crusade to easily expand PvP by pushing the envelope on the RvR lakes. The Elf RvR lakes are in general the narrowest across all maps of T4, so there is certainly a lot of room to expand into the PvE lake. How to Expand PvP… Dwarf – Black Crag

Karak Drazh is an interesting zone. Oh wait… I mean Black Crag (little observed fact, there is a small cave on the right side of the map called ‘Tunnel to Karak Drazh, I wonder if it was every intended for a side zone…). The RvR lake is designed to funnel armies down small corridors into tight fights, there isn’t exactly room for what we’d call ‘strategy’. For many new players to WAR, the greatest frustration with Black Crag is finding the south keep, an endless source of joy and humor for me… “Yes, yes, its up by the PQ ‘Poisonwing Canyon’.. just keep going to the end.” Today I explore the final zone in the Dwarf v. How to Expand PvP… Dwarf – Thunder Mountain

Happy 2011! I hope everyone has a splendid New Years Eve and let’s keep our fingers crossed for a bright and hopeful future for WAR. Today I take the battle to one of the former least-like zones in Warhammer, now with the lack of necessity of holding BOs for a zone lock no one minds it any longer. How to Expand PvP… Dwarf – Kadrin Valley

Heading down south in the Warhammer world, we enter the realm of the dwarves. In WAR if one was to take a poll, you would most certainly find that the DvG pairing is the least liked across all tiers. In tier 4 the reason is probably for the one reason we should like the DvG pairing – it isn’t very zerg/huge battle friendly. The Empire pairing in T4 is dominated by narrow maps with warcamps at the center of the map on opposite sides (east-to-west) of the lake. The DvG pairing on the other hand locates the warcamps on north-to-south opposites and the BOs aren’t placed in locations which entirely favor zergs or one dominating force. So for the longest time this pairing was largely neglected in T4 – especially in the days of forts. My hope is that by expanding the battle into the existing PvE lakes the DvG pairing in T4 will at least become somewhat more user friendly. Read more…

How to Expand PvP… Empire – Chaos Wastes

Last up for the Empire v. Chaos pairing are the Chaos Wastes, a desolate region located at the north pole of the world from whence demon spawn spill forth. The interesting thing about the Chaos Wastes is that the RvR lake is terribly bland, but you step into the PvE lake and it is crazy as shit. Fields of petrified warriors… a ship graveyard… twisted bramble… eerie neon-colored lakes… caves spewing forth wind and sand. I’m telling you CW beyond the ORvR lake is a bizarre world, a world which would be tons of fun to fight in! Lets explore just some of the exotic locations… Read more…

How to Expand PvP… Empire – Praag

Arguably one of the most highly rated zones in Warhammer. There is something about Praag which draws players to it, and fights here are never dull. I think it would be reasonable to assume that the nature of the ORvR lake is the main reason everyone loves it. You look at every single ORvR lake from T1 to T4 and they are primarily vast open fields with keeps jutting out here and there and BOs scattered in the corners. Then you look at Praag with its twisted streets, dead-end alleys, open squares, shattered buildings. Yes, this is the truest sense of WAR. Few zones are zerg busters, and Praag is one of them. While my original argument with expanding the RvR lakes was to incorporate artistic wonder left in the PvE lakes, that is not the case with Praag for all the artistic wonder lay within the RvR lake. How to Expand PvP… Empire – Reikland

Yesterday I came up with an easy solution to a PvP expansion to WAR, at the expense of PvE. The solution: expand the RvR lakes into the PvE lakes and turn key PQs and Major landmarks into battlefield objectives. No new content is added, but the scale of ORvR doubles in some zones.

To me BOs always should have been something worth defending – key structures or choke-points. It always baffled me how so many BOs are just… open stretches of ground with some trees or a single building. Tactically speaking many BOs are seemingly pointless locations. The true art of the developers was instead poured into the PvE lakes, wasted talent since so few venture out into the PvE lakes. So now I present how I would expand the RvR lake a la my visual guide!
